Gastrointestinal Diseases and Treatments

Message from Dr. Khiem Nguyen

I had a broad and comprehensive medical training. I graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School, in Norfolk, Virginia.

My initial internship was in General Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital in NY. After a successful year, I went to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA, to complete my Internal Medicine residency.

I achieved my Gastroenterology education at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, under the instructions of a well-known therapeutic endoscopist, Dr. George Brodmerkel.

I accomplished an entire year dedicated to ERCP and other therapeutic modalities. I have had presentations at both National and Local Gastroenterological Societies and meetings.

I have been actively involved in the training of medical residents and students. I was honored with a “Teacher of the Year” award during my tenure at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Reading, PA. I intend to continue my involvement with the education of future physicians at St Lucie Medical Center.

I am very blessed with 3 beautiful and smart daughters.

St Lucie Gastrointestinal Diseases, PL specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of stomach, intestinal, gallbladder, biliary, pancreatic and liver diseases.

We offer comprehensive care for all Gastrointestinal conditions including Colon Cancer Screening, GERD (Reflux Disease), Peptic Ulcer Disease, Stomach/Intestinal Bleeds and Liver Diseases (such as hepatitis) for all age groups.

Dr. Nguyen specialized in Therapeutic Endoscopies, especially ERCP to treat biliary and pancreatic diseases; Sub-Mucosal Resection of localized intestinal lesions, including small tumor without needing surgery; Inserting Feeding Tubes for stroke patients or those need additional nutrition; Placing Gastrointestinal, Biliary and Pancreatic Stents to maintain patency for feeding and relieving obstruction;Performing Enteroscopy to treat small bowel diseases, especially bleeding source that regular upper and lower scope or endoscopy cannot reach.

Our office has the Video Capsule, also known as Pillcam or Capsule Endoscopy. This is a tiny camera, in the size of a medicine pill, that allows us to visualize the esophagus (Pillcam Eso) and small intestine (Pillcam SB) without needing any procedures or surgeries. The study is performed within the office and the result often is available within 24 hours

Dr. Nguyen has collaborated with St. Lucie Medical Center to acquire the Bravo pH monitor. This is a unique catheter-free capsule that is placed within the esophagus. It allows us to monitor and record the acid refluxing into the esophagus over 24 to 48 hrs. It also correlates the symptoms of reflux with the pH changes occurring within the esophagus, even during sleep. The best part of the probe is that the patient can maintain normal daily activities and diets, while it transmits and records important data relating to the patient's disease. The physician would use these information to properly treat and provide important recommendations to the patient. This is an outpatient procedure and the result is often available within 1-2 days.

Recently, Dr. Nguyen and St. Lucie Medical Center had obtained the Spyglass Cholangioscopy video scope. It is the most current state-of-the- art equipment and technology to allow Dr. Nguyen to directly visualize, treat and correct any abnormalities, from gall stones to cancer, associated with the bile duct leading into the liver and gall bladder. He and the hospital are the only ones that can effectively operate and provide this modern and high tech machinery along the Treasure Coast. Only Orlando and West Palm Beach are the nearest area that has this technology. After many successful cases, Dr. Nguyen has become very efficient and effective in providing this type of meticulous care.

The physician is also well trained in motility disorder of the entire intestinal tract. Therefore he can perform and analyze studies and tests to diagnose and treat any illnesses such as difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), stool soiling (stool incontinence), chronic constipation, recurrent bowel obstruction, etc.
